Most scanners default to the camera, but many also let you upload an image to scan, a feature that's invaluable when the code isn't physically in front of you. Here's how upload-to-scan works and the situations where it's the only thing that does the job.
How Upload-to-Scan Works
Instead of capturing a live view, the scanner analyzes an image file you provide and finds the QR code inside it. You select the picture, the tool detects the pattern, and it reveals the link, exactly like a camera scan but sourced from a file.
When You Need It
Upload-to-scan is essential for codes that exist only as images: a screenshot, a code emailed to you, one saved in a document, or a code displayed on the very screen you're using. A camera can't capture its own display, so uploading is the way through.
Finding the Upload Option
In a scanner app or an online tool, look for an image, gallery, or upload icon alongside the camera view. Tapping it lets you choose a file from your device or photo library instead of scanning live.
Getting a Clean Read
Upload the clearest version of the image, with the full code visible and a margin around it. Compressed or cropped pictures decode less reliably. As always, a clean code from a good QR generator reads best from any source.
